The incredibly unique species of shark that aren’t found everywhere. Their behavior, history, and anatomy are very unusual. There is very little human interaction with this species of shark as it is rare and unique. Today I will share some incredible fun facts about thresher sharks with you in this article.

What Are Thresher Sharks?

Have you ever imagined a shark with a tail? If not, you need to see this fantastic type of shark with an unusually long tail(caudal fin). Thresher sharks are also called fox sharks.

A list of some incredible fun facts about thresher sharks.

Origin of the Thresher Shark

An interesting fact about the thresher shark is that its origin is mysterious. This unusual and unique fish is closer to the Megamouth shark. But the scientists are still finding out its source. It has three species, but scientists are confused about the fourth one that they believe will be found with time. The species of thresher shark are:

  • Common Thresher
  • Bigeye Thresher
  • Pelagic Thresher

Slow Growing Sharks

An interesting fact about sharks for kids is that thresher sharks are relatively slow-growing sharks. They live up to 22 years of age and reach maturity between 8 and 13 years old. Still, there is a mystery about this shark’s lifespan because some scientists believe these sharks have much longer life spans.

Weight and Length of a Shark

An interesting fact about thresher sharks is that they can reach a length of 5meters and weigh up to 450 kgs. But the giant thresher shark ever recorded is 6m long, and its weight is 600kgs.

Habitat of Thresher Shark

These sharks love deep and open waters, but a fantastic fact about sharks is that they are found in low waters near coastal areas. At a depth of 1800m, thresher sharks prefer spending their lives in. These sharks breed around the coastal waters, and the juvenile sharks stay in the shallow water until they are mature. They prefer living in the Indian Oceans, Pacific, and the Continental shelves of Asia and America. But again, their exact habitat remains a mystery.

Heat Exchanger Sensory System

Like all other sharks, thresher sharks have electroreceptors to send electrical impulses from living creatures to detect them. But a cool thresher shark fact is that they have an additional heat exchanger system. They have a particular thermoregulation system that is known as endotherms. By muscle shivering and enhancing their metabolism, they produce heat in their bodies. It is a unique feature in the thresher shark that is found in no other shark.

An Impressive Hunter

An impressive and intelligent hunter that hunts down the school of fishes. These sharks are very athletic. An amazing fact about sharks is that they are famous for slaying their prey with their tails. Their tail helps them lure and hunt their game like many other sharks, these sharks to breach the water. As soon as the prey reaches near the shark, it slaps it with its tail until it is disabled. With a fast speed, it will attack the prey and keep on biting it until the whole prey is finished. They mostly hunt in the open ocean waters and eat Mackerel and Tuna, but sometimes they go for Seabirds.

Warm Blooded Sharks

These are the only species of shark with endothermic capability. To help them regulate their internal blood pressure, they have slow oxidative muscles. A shark fact is that their blood is 3.6°F warmer than the outer waters. It helps them use their powers efficiently because warm blood allows them to stabilize the cold water’s protein. This unique capability of thresher sharks makes them quick swimmers and agile hunters.

Fast Swimmers

A thresher shark fact for kids is that these sharks are actively intense shimmers. They can swim fast at a top speed of 30mph and are known as one of the fastest sharks in the ocean. They also jump out of the water, known as breaching. They have an extra speed because of their long tail and their endothermic capabilities. Their body shape is a torpedo that reduces the water drag around their body, helping them move fast.

Offspring’s of Thresher Shark

The reproductive behavior of thresher sharks is not well explored. No one knows yet either they are viviparous or not. They are viviparous means that the eggs evolve in the uterus until birth. An amazing fact about thresher sharks is that they give birth to 2-5 pups at one time, and those pups usually are 120-160cm in length. The unique phenomena in the womb are known as oophagy. The pups in the womb start feeding the unfertilized eggs present in the womb.

Are Thresher Sharks and White Sharks Related?

Threshers sharks are known as Mackerel Sharks. This family of sharks consists of Basking sharks, Great White sharks, and Mako sharks. Another interesting fact about thresher sharks is that they are somehow related to Megalodon sharks because they can regulate their blood temperature. They also have similar other biological features like an anal fin, five-gill slits, two dorsal fins, and a wide mouth that goes past the ears.

Part of an Interesting Myth

A fun fact about sharks is that these sharks have a long-standing myth. It is thought that Swordfish and Thresher sharks work together to attack whales. According to the legend, the thresher shark will swim in front of the Whale and hurt it badly by whipping its tail. In the meanwhile, with its sharp nose, swordfish will attack the Whale. When they can kill it, they will feast it together. No one knows why it is a common myth that can’t be true because neither the swordfish nor the thresher fish eats whales.

Are They Threat to Humans?

Thresher shark is no threat to humans because only one case of attack is being reported. Even in that case, the individual provoked the shark by grabbing its tail. There are reports that the shark has attacked four boats, but people were trying to capture it in all those cases.

The interesting fact about sharks is that they are not a risk to humans, but humans are at risk. Due to the decline in the fish population, specific measures are being taken to stop fishing these creatures. These species are no threat to us, so we should stop hunting them.
