What is a small craft advisory?

A Small Craft Advisory is a warning issued by the National Weather Service when wind and wave conditions are expected to be hazardous to small boats. The criteria for issuing a Small Craft Advisory can vary depending on the area and the type of waterway, but generally it is issued when winds are forecast to be 20-33 knots (23-38 mph) and/or waves are forecast to be 4-6 feet. This advisory is intended to alert boaters of the potential for rough conditions that could capsize or damage small boats, and to encourage them to use extra caution or stay in port.
